Have you ever realized that nowadays if people looking for a job, they will put ‘Open for Opportunity” on their social media profile? Do you know the different between just open ourselves for opportunity and create opportunity for ourselves?

Sometimes when we are in a negative situation; probably things are not going the way we want them to be; we may read some motivational quotes from online, websites or mostly, social media platforms. And most of time, we will feel some motivations and inspirations right the way; here I would like to introduce two common quotes about opportunity:

Opportunity is for those who are prepared!

and

Don’t wait for opportunity, let’s go and create one!

Before we go on and dig deep into these two quotes about opportunity, please allow me to share some statistics with you about motivational quote!

The impact about motivational quote is like this:

Highly Motivated — the first 5 to 8 minutes we read it

Still Feeling motivated — next 5 minutes after the first 5 to 8 minutes

Forget about it and keep doing what we do — from the moment we read it for not exceed 15 minutes.

This is not because our memory is too short; it’s the excitement that we can keep without further action taken would not be able to last longer than 15 minutes! That means no matter how many of motivational quotes you read everyday; it’s hard to help us to make our dream come true without actual actions.

Going back to those two quotes about opportunity; actually they both are right and have it’s meaning! The first one means we are highly disciplined and keep moving and learning with fortitude; so when opportunity is right in front of us, we can take it without any hesitation!

The second quote is a little tricky; we believe that we can create our own opportunity, however in more often cases, we have no idea how to create it. One may say, “I am jobless now, you tell me how can I create opportunity for myself!” The truth is, if you’re sitting at home and complaining about no opportunity; then I can be sure you won’t get much chance to meet one nor create one!

For those if you’re struggling about your career, relationship or even business; here I have one method that I’ve been using and it works well.

This is the D.I.O.R. method:

D as Dream — Do you have dream in different aspect? If you do, then you’re going to have a great start here!

I as Imagination — Can you imagine? I am sure you can, so you’re all good for the second step!

O as Opportunity — With D and I; you will be able to create O; and which require real actions to make it happens.

R as Reality — This means your real life; after the first 3 steps, finally we will have to bring it to become your reality!

Here’s my story of how D.I.O.R. works for me:

When we’re young, we like to dream about our future. Some of those dream may turn out to be just a dream or we changed what our perspectives, those dreams may just throw into garbage bin. Some of those dreams were forgotten; while we were too busy grown up and pursue other things we want; money, career or family. At this point, try to think if you have those kind of dream just like I do.

I took an opportunity and went to one of my bucket list place — New York City in Jan 2020; and I found myself again during my trip. I was siting in a cafe, watching people around and past by, it was my first vacation in 12 years alone. I took my note out and began writing. Suddenly, my dream from 13 years old came back to me; I dreamed to write my own book and published it; in the 80s this dream was far from reality; but with today’s opportunity; it’s much easier because we have Amazon. I sat there, imagined if I could publish my book one day, and began to feel how would that feeling be. Came back from NYC, I made up my mind and began to plan accordingly to the imagination I had for the achievement.

I began to post on LinkedIn everyday, that was the first step. Keep posting everyday helps to shape my writing skills and create my self-discipline for writing; and I get the bonus; I have been able to build my network with great people from all over the world; someone special keep encouraging me, others give me suggestions, support, inspiration and motivations to keep writing. They keep reading what I write everyday; mostly are positive vibes and encouragement for others, and that give me strong sense of what I am interested in writing. In my personal side, I have made lots of friendship through this journey; I also met a lot of great people professional wise, they are a complete new community I have never had before. Although I know a lot of people thought that LinkedIn is for professional only social media, but for me, having a great community actually give me infinitive possibility and even opportunity. All these small achievement became the power of encouragement and soon will see what it brings!

My plan to publish my first book is on schedule; the past few months’ conditions didn’t stop me, instead, due to lockdown and quarantine, I actually kind of having a little spare time to write more. So I am sure soon, I will make my dream come to be my reality.

The D.I.O.R. method doesn’t require any luck; all we need is a right mindset and keep taking actions.

And here, I have some suggestions for you:

In Relationship

Why relationship first? Because in this digital era, building relationships is almost the most important aspect for life, business, leadership and career. I am not only talking about romantic relationship; all kinds of relationships included.

If we dream to have a great network of people, then imagine how great it would be to have one another’s support; have some brainstorming or even fun chat sometimes. Some could even turn into business collaborations or future career opportunity. So in order to create the opportunity, be real, be you and open yourself to communicate with others; with these imagination with action, you will have all possible opportunity in the next future!

In romantic relationship; some said that when you keep looking for one, you won’t see anyone, but when you’re not looking, someone will just come to you. This is not wrong at all. If we have a high desire to want to find a partner; sometimes the desire will overpower our mind; and that’s where either we couldn’t see one, or we see a lot of them and thinking they are all chance (not opportunity); moreover, if we allow desire to be extreme and turning into desperately desire for it, then the chance of getting into a toxic relationship will be 4 times higher.

I had been there done that; when I was 29 years old; I was so desperate for marriage and have my own family; I ended up putting myself into an abusive and violence marriage for few years. And that took me through depressions for another nearly a decade.

My suggestion for you is, don’t rush and don’t allow your desire to go out of control. Follow your pace and learn more.

As I have learned, the best partner could be:

  1. Our Best Friend — the person who know us the best besides ourselves
  2. Our Hero/Heroine — the person we admire the most and trust the most
  3. Our #1 Supporter — the person who supporting us always regardless ups and downs
  4. Our #1 Cheerleader — the person who encouraging us in various ways always, regardless the situation and our decisions are good or bad.

These 4 type of people usually comes in one person if you got the first one. So take a little time to learn about the person we like, get to know them better before we take further steps closer. Keeping our own pace; starting with friendship, the rest will fall into place as it could be.

In Career

If we’re happy for where we are, then we can dream of what next level we want to be, follow the same method so we find the way to achieve it. If we are struggling, or feeling lost in where we are at, or don’t even have a job now; let’s take a step back to our dream, learn to know what we want, imagine how it will be when it came true; so that we can follow the steps to make it happens. It may require us to start from scratch; and we are never to late to start a new journey. As much as we can support our living financially, go for it. If financial situation is the one that stop us or holding us back; try to think laterally; maybe you need another job to make extra to support, maybe you need to put your dream as a side hustle; anyway you can think of to make it work. As long as we are willing to work, nothing can stop us to make our living! Put our pride on the side and everything will just become easier!

I’ve been there done that; 3 jobs to continue to make enough money for living; make extra money for pursue an academical training in UCLA. All we need, is belief of ourselves and determination.

In Business

In business, sometimes we have to go back to the root to find ourselves, especially when adversity happened. — Joseph Rosa

What’s the root? The root is where we came from, where we began; it will give us a clearer picture when encountered adversities. We will find those whys from the beginning of our business, we will find our purpose and direction. Ultimately, we find the root of our dream, and that give us the way to start all over again. Follow the D.I.O.R. again so we will find the way to keep our business going.

D.I.O.R. is a method base on changing the way we want to change, and it’s a mindset practice that will help us to rebuild our positive mindset for better reality.

Mindset can be rebuilt and reset, the key always is ourselves!
