“Just Hold On … !”
I hear myself saying it, which usually happens during the first mile or two when my muscles are sore; I feel that I am not capable or able to finish the exercise. I thought maybe it was because I hadn’t exercised for a while; I had lost the strength that I had built.
I kept thinking if a similar feeling had occurred before; I wanted to know if I really lost the power and strength; if that’s the case, I will make a plan to gain them back. Through my desire to figure it out, I learned something new about our mind, brain, and body cooperation and collaborations.
Mind, Brain, and Body:
You probably know that our brain has one crucial job, to keep us alive and survive in any given situation, especially when it could be dangerous. Even though exercise usually is not one of those life and death situations, our brain will alert us when anything consumes a higher than normal amount of energy.
The circuitry:
Our brain begins to signal us by sending bodily sensations, such as soreness and tiresome, to awake our conscious mind to make decisions and take action; if that’s the case, we want to stop the exercise. When we disregard that and persist, these sensations will be gone, and our brain will rewire the circuitry to understand better what we are doing. At this point, the dopamine kicks in, and it gives us pleasure to keep going.
To toughen your strength:
Neuroplasticity — the ability of our brain in learning and strengthening. What we call training or practicing is that; we allow our brain to recalculate the energy we have for exercise. As we further the practice, we will feel less and less soreness and tiresome at the beginning of the exercise.
Although our subconscious mind is doing over 80% of the work in our daily life, we can overcome most of the challenges when we can have our conscious mind take the lead.
When we understand better how our mind, brain, and body run correlatively and simultaneously, we can achieve and accomplish what is in front of us.
Remember this: every bodily signal means something to us; read them carefully, and you will become more aware.
You have the ultimate power of holding on and carrying on; never underestimate your strength!
